Henri at the Miami Open
Wassup everyone! It’s Henri here, and I’m at the Miami Open in Miami, Florida. I came to meet and greet all the tennis players that were invited to come for the tournament, learn more about the event, and enjoy the beautiful weather down in Miami. Even if it’s still winter and many are suffering from the cold temperatures, people who flock to the event can experience the great weather associated with the Sunshine State. I’m excited about the upcoming tournament and seeing all the players give it their all for the chance to win.
First, I’ll share a little history about the Miami Open. For starters, the event is one of the biggest tournaments outside of the Grand Slams. The idea of the event started back in the 1960’s with professionals such as Pancho Gonzalez, Jack Kramer, and Butch Buchholz traveling around the U.S.playing tennis exhibition matches on temporary courts. Buchholz wanted to create a major early-season tennis tournament, rivaling other tennis events, and build what he called a “Winter Wimbledon”. This idea manifested into the first Miami Open, starting in 1985, in Delray Beach. With the large amount of prize money and many spectators coming to the event, it became the largest non-Grand Slam tournament in the world. In the 2000’s, the tournament expanded with the Indian Wells Masters. Together, both tournaments were played back-to-back in March, which became known as the “Sunshine Double”. It’s a rare feat for a player to win both events in the same year. While the Miami Open has changed sponsors over the years, the prize money has increased over time, starting at $1.8 million to now over $13 million today!
The list of players who will be competing is an extensive one, full of pros and legends in the sport. For starters, the top men’s playersare Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, and Lorenzo Musetti. In my opinion, I want Alcaraz to win the tournament, as he’s part of the same heritage as me, and I enjoy watching him with the many titles he’s won so far. I try to emulate his style as best as I can and see how I can better myself when I watch him compete. The top women competing are Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina, Coco Gauff, and Jessica Pegula. A favorite of mine for the women’s is Coco Gauff, because I also like her style and believe her skills can carry her all the way to the finals. It’ll be exciting to see all the players compete and enjoy playing outside in the beautiful Miami weather.
While I’m here, I’m excited to try all the fun activities they offer here, as well as test out the many food and drink options offered. Here are a few that I’m eager to check out during the event. There’s the Piper-Heidsieck Skyview that people can use to watch the games from a cool, high angle. There’s a skill zone to practice your skills, which I will definitely use while I’m here. The event also has many partner booths that will be handing out giveaways for people who come. I always like to go to the booths and gather all the cool giveaways that different brands offer. The Miami Open also has a variety of food and beverage options, which include American, Asian, Latin, Italian, Mediterranean, French, and more. I want to try freshly baked croissants while I’m here, as they're one of my favorites. I also want to find Taro Boba tea to sip on while I enjoy the many activities they offer.
The Miami Open will be a very fun event for me and can't wait to show the chums all the things the Open has to offer! It’s gonna be a wonderful time, and we will make the most of it this year.
